How to find a wireless access point IP address?

Have you ever had to determine the IP address of your wireless network or someone else in order to be able to change its parameters? Most people configure their wireless networks as soon as they exit the box without any configuration and therefore have no idea of the IP address

However, these days, you must log in and at least configure a secure password for your WiFi network which is different from that assigned by default. In addition, it is a good idea to change the router password, so that someone else connected to your network cannot connect to your router and change the settings.

If you are already connected to the wireless network, it is very easy to determine the IP address of the router. If you are not connected to WiFi, you must have access to an Ethernet connection.

You can only determine the IP address of the router from a device connected via WiFi or from a device connected by cable (Ethernet). Cable connection does not require a password, so it’s an easy way to get around WiFi security if you don’t remember the WiFi password.

Connected to the router

If you are connected by wire or wireless, you can simply open the control prompt and start a simple command. Go to Start, Run and type CMD . At the command prompt, type ipconfig and press Enter.

Scroll down until you get the header with Ethernet Ethernet or Wi-Fi adapter LAN wireless in the name. Usually you will only see one, but computers with WiFi cards and Ethernet cards will see two lists. The IP address of the wireless access point is the IP address listed for the default gateway .

Note that the default gateway is actually just the IP address of the router that connects to the Internet. In some networks with more than one router, it may be the IP address of your ISP router, but not necessarily of your wireless router. To detect more than one router, see the link in the paragraph below on the digitization of your network for peripherals.

Now you can go ahead and type this address in your browser and you should see the connection page for your router.

In my case, my default gateway is my Verizon Actiontec router which also serves as a wireless router. That’s about it! It is quite easy to get the IP address from the access point this way.

However, if you cannot execute the command prompt for any reason or if you need to find multiple routers on the network, you need a network analysis tool. Make sure to check my previous article on how to scan your network for peripherals, which will show you not only how to get the IP address for all routers, but also for any other device connected to the network.

Not connected to the router

If you are not connected to the router via WiFi or via Ethernet, you will not be able to determine the IP address of the router unless the network does not use encryption. If a password is set on the Wi-Fi network, you are unlucky.

However, you can still get information about wireless networks to which you are not connected using certain third-party tools. They will not be able to give you a lot of information, but they could help you find a hidden wireless network.

For example, let’s say you go to your school library and you know there is a wireless network, but SSID broadcasting is disabled for security reasons. Even if it is not secure at all, people use it to try to prevent others from connecting to their wireless network.

In this type of case, you need a WiFi network detection tool. You can use a tool like Xirrus WiFi Inspector to make sure the wireless network actually exists. WiFi Inspector is a program that can detect wireless networks even if the broadcasting of SSID is disabled.

In order to download it, you need to fill out a lot of information, but luckily you can just do it and it will allow you to download it. When you execute it, it will give you a list of all the networks in your neighborhood. Note that Windows cannot detect networks whose SSID is disabled.

If you are connected to the network, it can display the gateway, the DNS server, the MAC address, etc. Otherwise, you will only see the information in the middle section that shows you the SSID, the signal strength, the network mode (a / b / g / n / ac), encryption (WPA, WPA2, etc.), channel and frequency.

So, to recap, you must be connected via WiFi or Ethernet to determine the IP address of the default bridge using the control prompt. If there is more than one router on your network, you will have to analyze your network using the tools I mentioned in my previous post.

Finally, if you do not have a network connection, you can always obtain basic information on wireless networks using a WiFi detection tool. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to comment. To enjoy!
